What is DSL?
Digital Subscriber Line or DSL service offers a high-speed dedicated Internet connection capable of transmitting voice and data traffic over ordinary copper telephone lines. Internet Alaska's Symmetrical DSL or SDSL product is noted for the fact it provides the same transmission speed for both incoming and outgoing data traffic. IA's SDSL service is made possible through an agreement with MTA, and will be offered within specified locations of MTA's service areas, including parts of Eagle River, Palmer, and Wasilla.

Is there more than one type of SDSL?
SDSL service comes in two types, Voice-Data and Data Only. Voice-Data service allows you to use your telephone and SDSL connection simultaneously, and any customer with an analog phone line is eligible for the service. Data Only service does not include the ability to transmit voice communications, and is primarily geared towards business customers.

Why SDSL service?
SDSL service is up to 20 times faster than a standard dial-up connection, and provides a secure dedicated connection. Cable modems operate over a shared network with significant security issues, and cable modem users often experience service degradation (a decrease in speed) as more users are added to the network. In addition, cable modems offer one-way high speed transmission only, SDSL is a two-way or bidirectional transmission, which provides ultra fast transfer rates while sending or receiving data simultaneously.

How much does SDSL service cost?
Voice-Data SDSL service comes in varying speeds, and 64 Kb unlimited access service starts as low as $54.95 per month (excluding setup and equipment) for business and residential customers alike. Set up costs begin at $149 and the equipment (IA provided MVL modem, crossover cable, filter, and PPPoe Software) is free under our current promotion.

Is financing available?
Internet Alaska offers financing for SDSL equipment and installation fees (excluding monthly recurring charges) through an arrangement with Norwest Financial. Norwest Financial's Preferred Customer Accounts offer 90 day, same-as-cash financing, and are available to individuals only (consumers and sole proprietorships, but not corporations or LLC's).
