What is DSL technology?
Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) is a technology that allows high-speed data transmission over ATU's copper lines that are already in place.
Internet Alaska's IDSL is a service in which digital data is transmitted at 128Kbps over a regular copper telephone line. The copper pair then bypasses traditional telephone equipment, and transmits the data back to Internet Alaska.
Think of the copper line as a transport vehicle capable of moving your data at speeds of up to 128K per second. This is commonly known as the port speed.
Much like driving on the highway, you don't always need to travel at the posted speed. However, you are capable of accelerating or bursting your speed to pass others when necessary.
Types of DSL Service
Depending on your requirements or personal preferences, you may want a guaranteed minimum speed - one at which you will never fall below. With IDSL you can set this minimum acceptable speed - it's called your committed information rate or CIR.
