Internet Security Alert:
Over the past several days there has been a sharp increase in network traffic that is specifically crafted to break into windows 95/98/NT machines and install a trojan program used for denial of service attacks. Alaska Communications Systems (ACS) has been closely monitoring this trend, and to best protect our customers and insure the integrity and availability of our internet services, we are installing electronic blocks on our networks to stop the attack traffic immediately.
The impact to users should be minimal. However, customers who currently use native desktop peer-to-peer Windows file and print sharing across the internet to sites outside of ACS's network will experience a loss of Windows networking. Although we realize there may be an inconvenience placed upon users by this block, we believe that by taking proactive measures now, we will prevent much larger scale problems that are already occurring at other sites on the internet. We will be actively monitoring our internal network for evidence of attacks. In addition, we strongly recommend that all users install anti-virus software on their computers, and actively scan for viruses.
Additional information can be found at the Symantec website.
