Help: Free PPP 2.5.6

(1) Once opening the FreePPP Setup application, the following screen will appear. If your screen looks slightly truncated, you can expand it by clicking on the triangle in the lower left-hand corner of the screen.

  • The CONNECT button in FreePPP is synonmous to the OPEN button in ConfigPPP. This is the button you will press to initiate a connection to the Internet.
  • The Connect to option tells you which POP (Point of Presence) you will be connecting to. In this example, we will be connecting to the Anchorage POP.
  • The From option tells you where you are connecting from. Unless you manually configured FreePPP to begin with, this selection will say home . If your screen looks different from this, make sure you have clicked on the GENERAL tab.
  • The Usingoption tells you what type of modem you are using.

If you have not selected the General tab yet, do so now. We will now configure the general properties of FreePPP. All six boxes are self-explanatory.

  • "Allow applications to open connection" does just that. If you activate this box, you will NOT be required to open FreePPP setup to connect to the Internet.
  • "Disconnect if idle for" allows you to set a disconnect time. This box is useful up to the 10 minute mark. After 10 minutes of inactivity, the Internet Alaska terminal servers will disconnect you (regardless of the time you select here).
  • "Check line every" checks the line to verify that you are still connected. If it detects that you have lost the connection, you will be notified.
  • "Allow alerts during connection" will notify you if something goes wrong during your connection attempt.
  • "On connect, open FreePPP setup application"does just that. After you have connected, this window will pop up.
  • "On connect, open . . ." allows you to set which application is opened after you have connected. In this example, we have set Netscape Navigator 3.01 to automatically open after connecting.

We have finished configuring the General properties of FreePPP. We will now configure the Account properties.

(2) Click on the Accounts tab. At the right, select the city (or other) configuration you want to edit by pressing on the name once.

(3) Press the edit button to reveal the following screen:

  • Server name: In this example, the server name is Anchorage. You can name it whatever you like, however.
  • Area code: Enter the area code you are calling from. Since everyone will be calling from Alaska, you should enter 907 as the area code.
  • Phone number: Enter the local-dial-up number for your area.

ConnectDirectly Unless you wish to use a connection script, you should select Directly for your connection method.

User name:

Put your user name in this field.

Your USERNAME is also known as your LOGIN name. Your user name is the first part of your eMail address. If your eMail address is:

bob123@alaska.net

Then, your user name is: bob123

Do NOT type it as: BOB123 or Bob123

Password:

Enter your password in this field. If your password is:

GcDkMrYb
Then, type it exactly as: GcDkMrYb

Do NOT type it as: gcgkmryb or GCDKMRTB

Your password will appear on screen as €€€€€€€€€€. This is a security option that prevents people from seeing the letters that are there. If you think you made a mistake typing your password, erase the €€€€€€€ and retype.

(4) Click on the Options tab at the top of this screen to reveal the following window.

This screen is simple to configure; just input the information as follows:

  • Domain name: alaska.net
    Primary DNS: 209.112.130.2
    Secondary DNS: 209.112.160.2
IP Address: Click on the first button that says "Assigned by PPP server". If you have a Static IP account, the PPP server will automatically assign the same IP number to you everytime you log in

(5) Click on the OK button to bring you back to the main screen.

(6) Click on the Modems tab to reveal the following screen:

Depending on which type of modem you have and/or which type of modem you chose during the Internet Alaska setup, you may see a different modem than the one listed in this example.

(7) Click once on the modem whose settings you wish to configure.

(8)Press the edit button to reveal this screen.

NOTE: of all the screens you have configured for FreePPP, this screen is the most variable. You will likely have a different configuration than the one shown here.

  • Modem config name: You can name your modem anything. Whatever you type here does not affect your ability to connect to Internet Alaska.
  • Connected to: If your modem is connected to the modem port, choose "Modem Port"; if connected to the printer port, choose "Printer Port"; if connected to another port, choose that port.
  • Port Speed: If you have a 9600 or 14400 modem,
set the port speed to: 19,200.
  • If you have a 28,800 or 33,600 modem,
set the port speed to: 38,400 or 57,600.
  • Dial type: Select TONE or PULSE dialing. Almost everyone will have to choose TONE.

  • Speaker enabled: If you want to hear your modem connection, activate this box. If you prefer a more peaceful connection, do NOT activate this.
  • Hangup on disconnect: You should activate this box. You will want your telephone to disconnect when you close the connection.
  • Performa internal modem: If you have a Performa internal modem, you will want to activate this box.
  • Long re-dial delay: You may or may not choose to activate this box. If you are having problems redialing, activating this box may help.
  • Fast modem initialization: Do NOT activate this box.

  • Modem init string settings:
  • Do NOT use the autodetect feature. It will likely cause problems with your connection; rather, use the second option.
  • Most modems will work well with any of the following strings: AT&F, AT&F1, AT&F2, AT&K3. If none of these work for you, then you will need to consult your modem documentation for assistance.
