Help: Check Your DNS Numbers

What are DNS numbers?
Each website (yahoo.com) has an address associated with it (209.113.125.24). Because it would be difficult for us to remember the numbers, DNS, or Domain Name Service, keeps a record of all the names and numbers on the Internet.

How to check your settings
Internet Alaska's DNS numbers are 209.112.130.2 and 209.112.160.2. However, we used to have a different set of DNS numbers that your computer may still be using. To make sure you have the most up-to-date settings, click one of the following links:
    Windows 95/98/NT

Windows 95/98 Instructions

  • Double-click on the "My Computer" icon on your desktop
  • Double-click on "Dial-up Networking Folder"
  • Right-click once on the Internet Alaska icon, and select properties from the menu.

  • Type your local dialup number in the box labeled "Telephone Number"
  • Click on the 'Server Type' tab or button on this screen. This will bring up a Server Types window.

DUN Server Types

  • Click on the 'TCP/IP Settings' button. This will bring up a TCP/IP Settings window.

  • server assigned IP address should be checked in the top section.
  • specify nameserver addresses should be checked in the middle section
  • Set the Primary DNS 209.112.130.2 and Secondary DNS to 209.112.160.2
  • Use IP header compression and Use default gateway for remote network both should be checked in the bottom section.
  • And then hit OK until you return back to your Dial-Up networking folder, and try connecting again.

Macintosh (Open Transport) Instructions

  • Open the TCP/IP Control Panel. (Go to the Apple icon in the upper left-hand corner of the screen,  then to the control panels folder, and select TCP/IP.)

Macintosh (FreePPP) Instructions

  • Once opening the FreePPP Setup application, the following screen will appear. If your screen looks slightly truncated, you can expand it by clicking on the triangle in the lower left-hand corner of the screen.

  • Click on the Options tab at the top of this screen to reveal the following window.

FreePPP Account Options 

This screen is simple to configure; just input the information as follows:

  • Domain name: alaska.net
  • Primary DNS: 209.112.130.2
  • Secondary DNS: 209.112.160.2
  • IP Address: Click on the first button that says "Assigned by PPP server". If you have a Static IP account, the PPP server will automatically assign the same IP number to you everytime you log in

Macintosh (TCP) Setup

  • Open the MacTCP control panel and click on PPP.
  • Press the "More" button.
  • Check to make sure your 'Domain' and 'IP Address' entries match those shown in the window below.
